How to Use the Yumpu Online Menu Maker

Creating an online menu with the Yumpu online menu maker is surprisingly simple. You do not need to have technical skills or any knowledge of coding to create a great digital menu. All you need is to follow the following steps:

Step 1: Design the menu in PDF format

Creating an online menu on Yumpu.com requires that you start with the original draft in PDF format. Therefore, menus in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint or any other format should be exported to PDF. There are several tutorials available online on how to do that. If your menu is already in PDF, skip to the next step.

Step 2: Upload the PDF document on Yumpu

Visit the official site of Yumpu. Then drag and drop the PDF document to the site. Uploading will start immediately and may require you to wait for some minutes, depending on the size of the file. After the upload is done, you will be required to create an account on Yumpu’s free online menu maker. All you need is type in your email address. Then go to your email and activate the account.

Step 3: Set up the new online menu

Edit the uploaded menu by adding a suitable title as well as meal descriptions. If your restaurant has a logo and brand images, add them and ensure they are placed in the right positions. You could also change the color of the font to match your restaraunt's brand. Customize the font size and color of the text. For the headers use a larger font and consider using italics for meal descriptions.

Step 4: Embed the menu on your website

Once you’re done with editing, it’s time to embed the menu on your site or blog of your choice. By clicking on the ‘Embed’ link, you will be directed to the Embed wizard. It is recommended to use the advanced embed widget. It offers the best embedding options for online menus. The “size” and “style” tabs are the most important when embedding your menu. These tabs can be enabled on the left-hand side of the Embed wizard. Once you are done, copy the embed code and paste it in your website’s HTML.

  1. The lack of video embedding is a big no-no for me, it seems I have to switch sides and try Yumpu. With video being more and more important in social media I find it hard to understand why they don’t offer this option….

  2. I’m seriously tempted to upgrade to their premium plan just for the statistics, I have no clue if what I’m doing is ok for my visitors.

Helen, yes, I think they should and will make changes soon so that video embedding is possible but for now, Yumpu is a very good solution.

Victoria, having access to statistics is crucial, otherwise you will never know what you are doing great and what you should stop doing.

  3. I haven’t published a digital magazine before so I don’t have a lot of experience thus no clue in what platform to pick. Which platform is best for an absolute newbie like me?

Since both platforms have a free plan I recommend trying them both and decide this for yourself. I personally prefer Yumpu, as it offers some more features and is really intuitive to use.

  4. I’ve always wanted to publish my own magazine but I kept postponing it. Right now I’m stuck between Issuu and Yumpu so I have to do my homework between choosing one…

  5. I finally figured out how does Issuu work! I initially thought that it also helps me to put the pdf together but i have to do this on my end. Can’t wait to get my magazine online!

Melanie, I can recommend to start with Yumpu, as it is really simple to use and easy to understand.

Robbie, that’s great! Keep fiddling with it to learn more.

  6. Have to agree, their help center sucks! It took them more than a week to answer a simple question – which I fixed in the meantime no thanks to them.

  7. Honestly, is anyone ever going to post a 500-pages magazine? I barely manage to edit 40-50 pages, I can’t imagine working my way up to 500…

  8. I’m using their free plan and it has everything I need right now. Still trying to figure out how to create the perfect layout to make the most of my magazine. And yes, the audio/video restrictions are such a bummer even more so considering they don’t offer these in any of their paid plans.

      Jonathan, sorry to hear that.

Penelope, yes there are people that have created 500+ pages magazines. Not many, but there are a few.

Sarah, from the looks of it, you should give Yumpu a quick test as it also allows you in the free plan to add video/audio and images.
